This book was about an African American girl named Jamaica who wanted to play basketball with her brother but he would not let her tag along. She followed him to the park anyway then jumped into the middle of the ball game. Her brother told her to go play on the swings instead of with him and his friends. Jamaica began to build a sand castle. A little boy named Berto wanted to help Jamaica build the sand castle but she would not let him. Jamaica realized that she was being mean to Berto just like her brother had been mean to her. Jamaica let Berto help her build the sand castle. When Jamaica’s brother finished playing basketball he wanted to help build the sand castle too. Jamaica decided that she didn’t mind if her brother tagged along too. I would use this book in a classroom to discuss how important it is to treat others as you would want to be treated. Also I could talk about being the bigger person in a situation in order for the situation to be solved faster.
