Glass Slipper, Gold Sandal: by Paul Fleischman, Folk

This was a worldwide Cinderella story. It was very interesting to read because there were many different versions mixed together to make one. In this story the little girl’s mother had died so the little girl convinced her father to marry the widow down the street. The stepmother started being mean to the little girl by only giving her scraps of food. The fairy and the animals began giving the girl food. Once she began eating properly she bloomed into a rare beauty. From there the story continues like the traditional Cinderella where the girl is forbidden to go to the castle to meet the King. The witch put a spell on the girl for her to have beautiful clothes to wear to the castle. The girl loses her shoe and the King then tries to find her. Eventually the girl and the King where married. The pictures in this book where phenomenal, they looked like they were from all different cultures around the world. In the classroom I would use this book to show how interesting the illustrations are. I would also use the book to compare this version of Cinderella to other versions as well as talk about the different cultures these stories came from.
